The Opportunity

Leonardo Southampton has a strong heritage in Infrared Detectors since the 1950s. Designed and built in the UK, Leonardo’s Detectors and thermal imaging sensors play a crucial role in providing visibility and situational awareness, no matter what the environmental conditions.

Due to significant demand for product development in this area, we are looking for a Test Technician to support the testing of development products and associated test equipment, predominantly in the space and astronomy area.

This role presents an excellent opportunity for an ambitious individual to develop and grow their skills and knowledge within a thriving organisation.

This role would suit either someone with a passion for technology and a good science background looking to develop their skills in an interesting and technically challenging industry, or an experienced technician looking to expand their skillset working with high performance products.

What You Will Do

You will work on a mixture of different product developments, whilst supporting the associated test equipment. You will also be responsible for supporting experimental and design verification tests, and generating supporting documentation. It will be necessary to work with specialist technologies relating to Infrared Detectors, including electro-optic test benches, cryogenics, black bodies and lasers.

What We Are Looking For

Desirable Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Ability to identify and work with a range of traditional test tooling such as digital meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, analysers, computers etc.
  • Ability to carry out bespoke, and repeat, testing of high value electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Ability to identify and work with a range of hand tools to a good level of precision and accuracy
  • Ability to interpret system schematics, circuit diagrams and quality instructions
  • Ability to collate and report test results, logs, records or any other relevant production test documentation
  • Strong focus on attention to detail
  • Ability to undertake fundamental levels of fault-finding, analysis and diagnosis of electronic assemblies
  • Ability to comply with Health and Safety requirements such as risk assessments and COSHH
  • Awareness of FOD (foreign Object Debris) and ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) safe working practices
  • Maintain pro-active communication with Team Leader and adjacent functions such as Project, Engineering or Quality as required.
  • Able to complete work with minimal supervision.

It would be nice if you had

  • Experience of electro-optical test benches
  • Experience of working in clean room environments
  • Practical soldering/workshop skills
